Sales Tax Holiday Garbage Disposal Contract Property Abatement

Andalusia City Council Meeting

Date: April 1, 2025 Type: Regular Meeting

Summary

The first spring meeting addressing sales tax holiday authorization, waste services contract renewal, and property maintenance.

Key Decisions

Ordinance 2025-03: Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday Weekend (Second Reading/Adoption) — Council unanimously adopted the annual back-to-school sales tax holiday ordinance, waiving city sales tax for school supplies, clothing, and related items.

Holiday Period: Friday, July 18 through midnight Sunday, July 20, 2025

Background: This is a state program that has run for many years, and Andalusia has consistently participated in waiving its local sales tax during the designated weekend. Tax-exempt items include school supplies, clothing, shoes, crayons, books, and other educational materials (though not all items qualify).

Garbage Disposal Agreement with Coffee County Commission Landfill — Council approved and authorized the Mayor and City Clerk to execute a three-year garbage disposal and landfill contract with Coffee County Commission.

Background: The city has maintained a long-standing contract with the county for trash disposal. Service is billed by tonnage. After this three-year term, the contract will be renegotiated again.

Resolution 2025-11: Property Abatement — Council unanimously approved abatement of four nuisance properties:

  • Property on Pew Street
  • Property on Smith Street
  • Two properties on Snowden Drive

City officer recommended cleanup action for each property.

Attendance

Mayor Earl V. Johnson and full council present.
